We are pleased to announce that the WPC 2010 has been awarded a generous grant of $342,000 by the US Department of Defense’s Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC).
TATRC supported the inaugural World Parkinson Congress and has endorsed the unique format of the WPC program from the beginning. Bringing patients into the planning and implementations of the WPC program was a top criterion for their grant application showing their support of the interdigitation between the members of the PD community and the value they place on input from people living with Parkinson’s disease.
The Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) develops and actively manages initiatives and strategic partnerships in medical science and engineering to augment military medical advances ahead of the regularly programmed research. TATRC leads military medical research in health information technologies and computational sciences related to the organization, development, training, and utilization of medical knowledge. TATRC accelerates science and engineering technology applications to DoD implementation through validation studies, translational research, and demonstration projects using funding from congressional special interest programs, small business innovative research (SBIR/STTR), AMEDD advanced medical technology initiatives (AAMTI), joint incentive funds (JIF), and grants.
The Parkinson's disease related portfolio at TATRC emphasizes integration of research to: identify risk factors, characterize disease mechanisms and progression and identify interventions that slow or halt disease progression, prevent co-morbid development and restore function. These funded projects have direct relevance to military needs in protection from and treatment of neurological injury in soldiers and provide a disease model that informs many other medical research problems.
